The course comprises of history of philosophy, theory of science and ethics. It elucidates important concepts in these areas. Part 1 presents central epochs and thinkers in Western history from the Antique to the Present. Central ideas are culturally and socially contextualized and the development and alteration of worldviews is presented. Part 2 includes a systematic introduction in main concepts in theory of science and ethics (including metaethics, ethical theories and applied ethics).
Both parts present their contents with help of commenting literature (compulsory readings). Original texts will be presented in a compendium. The compulsory readings are the basis for the exercises and the written exam.
The students shall comprehend central ideas and texts in history of philosophy and theory of science. They shall know theories, terms and models from ethics. The students shall develop the faculty to reflect over central philosophical, epistemological and ethical problems.
The course consists of one double hour lecture and one double hour seminar per week. The lectures give a basic historical and systematic introduction in philosophy, theory of science and ethics. The lectures are open and participation is voluntarily. The seminars deepen the lectures with regard to understand theories and concepts and to write the exercises. The participation in the seminars requires to sign-up and is thereafter compulsory.
5 hours written exam with questions on history of philosophy, theory of science and ethics. Grading with characters from A to E for ’passed’, F for ’not-passed’.
Permission to the exam requires that one of exercise 1 or 2 and additionally exercise 3 is ‘passed’. The exercises consist of 3-6 pages, ca 400 word per page.
