GK1 Material technology 1 (6 credits) and GK1 Architectural and design history before 1900 (6 credits)

The course runs through the fall term and is an introduction to further studies at AHO.
The semester will be organized around design projects. There will be individual and group work as well as workshops. The students are divided into two architecture studios. The major part of the teaching will be common for the two studios.

- Introductory course in wood- plastic- and metal shops
- Analytical freehand drawing I
- AutoCad
- 3ds Max
At the end of the course the student should have an understanding of working methods and different approaches towards thinking and communicating within the discipline. He/she should have:
- Insight into professional methods and tools
- Knowledge of two- and three dimensional visualizations in connection to concept development and project presentation
- Experience in written and oral communication
- Some experience of how to use the schools’ workshops
- Some knowledge about different material properties and treatments
- Understanding of how to use freehand drawing as an analytical tool
- Basic knowledge of the use of computer aided design
The teaching will mainly be in the form of weekly tutoring and pin-ups, lectures and seminars. There will be an excursion common to all students at the beginning of the semester emphasizing on freehand drawing.
There will be reviews of the studio work with an external critique. Each student’s studio work will be assessed as pass/fail, subject to the Regulations for Master's degree programmes at Oslo School of Architecture and Design, § 6-14.

The teachers of the subsidiary courses will assign mandatory reading.

A compiled reader with relevant texts will be handed out in the beginning of the semester.
